2010 Melbourne Cup Carnival Race Dates & Programme

There is less than six months to go before the biggest carnival on the Australian racing carnival kicks off, the coveted Melbourne Cup Carnival in Victoria.

Held over a week at the esteemed Flemington Racecourse, the 2010 Cup Carnival features many of the year’s most anticipated and bet on races, highlighted by the world’s richest handicap, the Emirates Melbourne Cup.

This year the Cup Carnival will be an especially important and impressive affair as it is the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup, worth a record $6 million.

The four race days of the Melbourne Cup Carnival are the AAMI Victoria Derby Day, Emirates Melbourne Cup Day, Crown Oaks Day and Emirates Stakes Day.

The Cup Carnival provides racing fans and punters with the best betting opportunities as the world’s elite thoroughbreds fight it out over the four race days.

AAMI Victoria Derby Day

The opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, Victoria Derby Day is sponsored by AAMI and is the day for racing purists, featuring an incredible nine group races and four Group 1 features. The meeting is unique as the sole Australian race day where every event on the card has group status.

Emirates Melbourne Cup Day

Emirates Melbourne Cup Day is the most prestigious race meeting in Australia and is home to the world famous staying test, the Melbourne Cup. The 2010 Melbourne Cup with be the 150th running of the time-honoured handicap and is the biggest event on the calendar. The Melbourne Cup is the only group race of the day, but four Listed events are also on the card including the two-year-old fillies’ sprint, the AGL Renewable Energy Stakes (1000m).

Crown Oaks Day

The third meeting of the Cups Carnival, Crown Oaks Day is a classic day of racing, fashion and flair. Known as ‘Ladies Day’, Crown Oaks Day also features a prestigious Fashions on the Field competition. The Crown Oaks is the only group race at the meeting, but there are plenty of other great betting opportunities including the Listed mares race, the Crown Promenade Stakes (1100m), and the three-year-olds’ Listed MYER Spring Fashion Stakes (1800m).

Emirates Stakes Day

Held on the Saturday following the Melbourne Cup, Emirates Stakes Day is the closing meeting of the Cup Carnival and is known as ‘Family Day’ with great racing and other entertainment creating a true carnival atmosphere. The Emirates Stakes is the feature race, and is accompanied by four other group events.
