Horses Head Towards 2010 Melbourne Cup Carnival & MYER Classic on Derby Day

June 1st, 2010

With less than six months until the coveted 2010 Melbourne Cup Carnival, horses likely to be nominated for the feature races throughout the carnival are starting to emerge.

The Cup Carnival kicks off on Saturday 30 October with the AAMI Victoria Derby Day. The headline event of the meeting is the $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m), which was taken out by Monaco Consul last year.

AAMI Victoria Derby day features a sensational line up of races, the only race meeting in Australia where all the races have group status.

One filly on their way to the Victoria Derby day races, including a possible run in the $500,000 Group 1 MYER Classic (1600m), is three-year-old Raihana, recently transferred to the Sydney stable of David Payne from South African trainer Mike De Kock.

Another classy filly getting ready for a stint in the MYER Classic as part of a Sydney Spring Carnival campaign is the Peter Snowden-trained Shannara.

The promising daughter of Octagonal claimed an eye-catching win over 1500m at Rosehill last start and is now being spelled ahead of the spring.

Following Derby Day is the highlight of the four-meeting carnival, Emirates Melbourne Cup Day, featuring the world’s richest handicap, the $6 million Melbourne Cup (3200m).
