Caulfield-based trainer Stuart Webb has named the $1 million Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington as the major spring target for his improving young filly Yosei.
Yosei, a daughter of Irish sire Invincible Spirit, was impressive during her earlier racing campaign this year, headlined by her win in the Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 10.
The two-year-old then backed up her elite level success with a run in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick, where she finished fifth to Skilled.
Following her run in the Champagne Stakes Yosei was sent for a spell, and has reportedly improved in strength and condition stacking on 35kg over the last month or so.
A winner of two of her six career starts to date, Yosei will next be aimed at the lucrative three-year-old and fillies races at the annual Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
Webb is already mapping out Yosei’s spring campaign, which is to include three runs in the lead up to the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 13.
If she performs well in the Guineas, Yosei will then move on to the coveted Crown Oaks at Flemington on November 4, held as part of the second meeting at the esteemed Melbourne Cup Carnival.
