2010 Geelong Cup Preview

October 19th, 2010

On Wednesday one of the major spring carnival Cups will take place with the running of the $225,000 Group 3 Geelong Cup (2406m).

Two weeks out from the coveted 150th Melbourne Cup, due to be held as Race 7 at Flemington on Tuesday November 2, tomorrow’s Geelong Cup field features many Melbourne Cup hopefuls.

The Geelong Cup has been a good guide to the Melbourne Cup in recent years so keep an eye on the odds for tomorrow’s placegetters in the Melbourne Cup markets at Sportsbet after the race

Odds-on favourite in the Geelong Cup betting at Sportsbet is Moudre, one runner that is unlikely to gain a Melbourne Cup start even with a win tomorrow.

The Ciaron Maher-trained Moudre, paying $4.20 to win the Geelong Cup, is yet to pass the first elimination clause for the 150th Emirates Melbourne Cup and may still have to contest the Group 3 Saab Quality (2500m) on Victoria Derby Day to qualify for $6 million Melbourne Cup.

Of the 15-horse Geelong Cup field, just two runners have booked a spot in the Melbourne Cup with French stayer Americain and Gai Waterhouse’s mare Once Were Wild sitting 23rd and 15th respectively in the Melbourne Cup order of entry.

The Geelong Cup winner will likely receive a penalty for the Melbourne Cup and two runners that could secure a Melbourne Cup start with a win tomorrow are No Wine No Song and Drunken Sailor, who are currently 36th and 34th in the elimination order.

Nine-year-old No Wine No Song is having their maiden Melbourne start in the Geelong Cup, the 2008 Sydney Cup winner whose career has been marred by injury drawn wide in barrier 14 and paying $19 to win.

Meanwhile the Luca Cumani-trained Drunken Sailor is out to emulate star stablemate Bauer, who won the Geelong Cup in 2008 before finishing a nose behind Viewed in that year’s Melbourne Cup.

It will be the first Australian start for Drunken Sailor and Americain tomorrow.

Following Moudre in the Geelong Cup odds at Sportsbet is Peter Moody’s Mr Charlie paying $6.50 and drawn ideally in barrier two, and $7 chance Exceptionally also drawn well in barrier three.
