Maluckyday has been confirmed as the pre-race favourite for the 2011 BMW after the barrier draw took place earlier today.
The 2010 Melbourne cup runner up comes into the race fresh off a last fourth in the Group One Ranvet Stakes behind the 100-1 Zavite.
The Nick Moraitis owned four-year old ran an eye catching fourth behind Danleigh in the Chipping Norton over 1600m before seemingly being unable to handle the slow track in the Ranvet. He is also yet to win at Rosehill which will be a concern for the Hawkes team.
The Gai Waterhouse trained Descarado is also well in the market at $3.50. The 2010 Caulfield Cup winner was well backed in the Ranvet and looked the winner before overtaken by the gallant Zavite.
The High Chapparal colt comes into the race with an excellent record over the 2400m and looks the obvious testing material. Waterhouse has clearly had this race in mind since winning the Caulfield Cup with the colt.
“He will peak on Slipper day for the BMW. He has the miles under his belt now to be at the top” said Waterhouse who last won this race with Tuesday Joy in 2009.
Following his win at triple figure odds in the Ranvet, Zavite will go around at the much shorter quote of $12.50.
The Anthony Cummings trained eight year old ran second in the last year and has impeccable form through the traditional lead up race the Ranvet.
“He was three deep without cover for a mile and a half last year (finishing second), this year I’m very happy with him” said Cummings who will be looking to capture his third Group One with the Zabeel gelding.
Also in the Market is the Lloyd Williams owned Linton ($6.00), the Chris Waller trained Hawk Island ($14.00) and the David Hayes trained Laristan ($18.00). All other runners are quoted at $30 or better.
