Golden Slipper Day 2011 is shaping as a super day of racing with nine group races including five Group Ones.
The Group One action kicks off in the third race of the day when seven fillies and mares contest the Inglis Queen of the Turf Stakes over 1500m.
More Joyous will look to 12 wins in 13 starts on Slipper day, with her only defeat in that sequence coming in last year’s Cox Plate.
The second Group One of the day sees the three year old fillies fight it out in the Vinery Stud Stakes. Brazilian Pulse will start as a short priced after a commanding performance in the Keith Nolan Handicap at Rosehill last Saturday. The opposition is likely to come from Victorian pair Pinker Pinker and the Peter Moody trained Do Ra Mi.
The third Group One affair of Golden Slipper day will be the time honoured BMW stakes. The race is shaping as a showdown between two stars of last spring in Maluckyday and Descarado. Both were beaten in a boil over in the Ranvet, however with fitness now on their side, punters believe this could turn into a two horse war. Maluckyday is current favourite at $2.60, while Descarado is rated a $3.60 chance.
The George Ryder Stakes will again be the lead in to the 2011 Golden Slipper, with the a hot field contesting the 1500m Group One. The race will feature proven weight for age stars Theseo, Rangirangdoo and Danleigh as well as promising up and comers Aloha and Ilovethiscity. The George Ryder Promises to be the toughest betting race of Slipper day.
The Golden Slipper will be the highlight of the day with 16 youngsters looking to win the world’s richest two-year old race. For much of the lead up, Sepoy was considered a lock for the Slipper; however after the smart colt tasted defeat for the first time in the Todman Stakes last start, there has been a swell of support for
Smart Missile and Foxwedge. Peter Snowden will be hoping the rain stays away to give Sepoy, the horse that was at one stage odds on to win the 2011 Golden Slipper, the best possible chance.
