More Joyous will be the shortest priced favourite on Golden Slipper day after opening up at just $1.25 to win the 2011 Queen of the Turf Stakes on Saturday at Rosehill.
More Joyous has won 11 of her last 12 starts with her only defeat in that time coming to So You Think in last year’s Cox Plate.
In any other year More Joyous would be a shoe in for horse of the year, however this year she will barely get a look in thanks to the deeds of So You Think and Black Caviar.
The fact that her champion mare has not received some of the plaudits her peers have, clearly had Gai Waterhouse agitated after More Joyous cruised home to win the Myer Canterbury Stakes.
“I don’t know why all you press want to pull on her tail, you get a good horse you should be proud that she is here,” said a clearly aggrieved Waterhouse in response to the fact that the achievements of More Joyous have been so overshadowed.
More Joyous was scratched from this race last year, and the Waterhouse team could not be more confident that she will salute this time.
“How good is she?” asked Waterhouse’s racing manager Duncan Grimley after her last start win.
“That was beautiful. That was just a track gallop for her. We’ll go to the Queen of the Turf and then to the Doncaster,” continued Grimley
Nash Rawiller will renew his partnership with the horse he claims is ‘special’
“She just does it so easy, she just flows, even if she gets on the bit it doesn’t matter,” said Rawiller who was running out of superlatives to describe the champion mare.
Melito is second favourite for the 2011 Queen of the Turf Stakes at $6.50, while all other runners are at double figure odds.
