Local trainer Trevor Andrews has confirmed the ride of Troy Turner aboard Veracious in the $500,000 Schweppes WATC Derby over 2400m.
He will replace Patrick Carbery who failed in his attempt to be cleared by medical staff after his fall at the Geraldton Cup meeting last Sunday which resulted in an overnight hospital stay.
Carbery was optimistic about his chances of taking the ride earlier in the week on the horse which he took to victory in February in the TJ Smith Trophy.
Also in the race will by red hot apprentice Kyra Yuill who will make new career progress with a ride in the Derby on Moonlight Bay.
Yuill celebrated her 50th city win last week and a victory in the Derby would be the first by an apprentice in the history of the event.
WA Hall of Famer Frank Treen rode six Derby winners in his career and his first came at just 19 years old but at that stage he had already completed his apprenticeship.
Yuill, who doesn’t turn 21 until November, is third on the metropolitan jockeys premiership table with 32 wins but still 16.5 adrift of the leader William Pike.
Pike will also be in the Derby chasing his fifth straight black type victory with a good chance in Dreamaway.
Dreamaway has wins in the WA Oaks, Natasha Stakes, 1000 Guineas and the WA Champion Fillies Stakes so is unsurprisingly the hot favourite at $3.20.
Moonlight Bay is a few rows back in betting at a $13 quote on Luxbet.com.
Yuill has done the job before for trainer Grant Williams when she won on Avante last weekend.
The owners rewarded her for her hard work for the Williams stable and it’ll be the first time she rides this horse in her career.
“It was Jason Whiting’s ride, but he was obligated to ride Chiron,” Yuill said.
“It is a fantastic opportunity for me at my first ride in the derby.
“She is a definite chance. She hasn’t been able to beat the stablemate yet, but in the four fillies’ races she has run in she has come home strong each time.”
Other big players in 2011 WATC Derby betting are Playing God at $3.50 on the back of his outstanding East-Coast Autumn season and The Tenby Friar at $7.50.
Veracious has settled as a $14 hope after the jockey confirmation on current Luxbet.com odds.
