Golden Slipper Barrier Draw 2011 Revised

April 2nd, 2011

Following the early scratching of Golden Slipper emergency Do You Think from today’s $3.5 million two-years-old feature, the starting positions of the 16 starters in the 2011 Golden Slipper field have been revised.

Bart Cummings’ Starcraft colt and the sole emergency for this year’s edition of the world’s richest juveniles race, Do You Think had been allocated gate nine in the 2011 Golden Slipper barrier draw.

The withdrawal of Do You Think has seen the following changes to the starting gates for the 16 remaining Golden Slipper hopefuls:

#1 Sepoy – In from barrier 10 to 9

Easing favourite in the Golden Slipper odds, Peter Snowden’s top colt Sepoy has a slightly easier assignment having come into a single-digit barrier.

Barrier nine has produced three Golden Slipper winners, not a bad record but not impressive either considering the last was Sweet Embrace back in 1967.

Sepoy sits at $3.50 in the Slipper odds and will be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy as owner Sheikh Mohammed and the Darley Stables seek their maiden Golden Slipper success.

#4 Foxwedge – In from barrier 11 to 10

John O’Shea’s Fastnet Rock colt Foxwedge one of the early fancies, paying $8 for the Golden Slipper win today.

Should sharpen with the addition of blinkers for the first time today, but the awkward draw leaves jockey Nash Rawiller with some work to do on this progressive two-year-old.

What is surprising is that barrier 10 (Sepoy’s original draw) has come up with more winners than nine with five, most recently Danzero (1994).

#1 Salade – In from barrier 12 to 11

Cummings’ top chance at preparing his first Golden Slipper winner in over three decades, Salade earned a spot in the field winning his first and only start to date in the Pago Pago seven days ago.

Tough draw but this is a speedy colt with ability to settle midfield and come home quickly.

Won the Pago Pago in a faster time than Altar won the Magic Night despite not having had the benefit of a previous start.

#9 Elite Falls – In from barrier 16 to 12

Second Slipper shot for O’Shea, beat Satin Shoes in the Reisling Stakes here a fortnight ago but needs a rain affected track to really be a threat again.

Has drifted out to $12 from $10 with the Rosehill track drying out to a Dead 5 this morning and the forecast indicating an upgrade to a Dead 4 by Golden Slipper race time.

#11 Altar – In from barrier 14 to 13

Stablemate of favourite Sepoy, Altar comes into the jinxed barrier 13 Golden Slipper gate, the only barrier yet to produce a Golden Slipper winner.

She is a drifting outsider now paying $41 but has had a good prep and is on the way up.

#13 Saramenha – In from barrier 15 to 14

$81 roughie – Nice breeding but no form to suggest enough improvement from their seventh place to Shared Reflections in the Sweet Embrace last start to do any good here.

#14 Fast And Sexy – In from barrier 17 to 16

Another $81 roughie for the Slipper, has the far outside barrier.

However, there is form and fact to suggest Chris Waller’s filly could be a good value Place Bet.

Coming off a third in the Reisling Stakes to Elite Falls, should improve with blinkers fitted for the first time today.

And in regards to the barrier, just two years ago Phelan Ready started from gate 16 to win the 2009 Golden Slipper.

The AAMI Golden Slipper is one of five Group 1 features at Rosehill today and is due to jump at 4:05pm (AEDST).
