Royal Randwick 2011 Chairman’s Handicap Form Guide

April 7th, 2011

The Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap is the longest race on Australian Derby Day at Randwick over 2600m.

A good field of 17 have accepted for the event with vastly different lead ups for many of the horses.

Speed Gifted is the races best rated runner but hasn’t performed to his best of late whilst Older Than Time is more inexperienced but has won her last four in a row.

These clashes will certainly excite many punters with a good deal of cash already invested on the race.

Check out our 2011 Chairman’s Handicap Form Guide below for comprehensive coverage of every starter.

Tips and betting updates will follow as the race draws closer so be sure to bookmark cupcarnival.com.au

2011 Chairman’s Handicap Form Guide

#1 – Speed Gifted (Barrier – 17) (58kgs)

  • Trainer: Lee Freedman
  • Jockey: Hugh Bowman
  • Career Stats: 20s – 5w – 4p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Albury

This seven-year-old has done it all before but will do it tough from the outside with the top weight. If its dry he’s unlikely but with rain he comes into it.

#2 – C’est La Guerre (Barrier – 6) (57.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Robert Hickmott
  • Jockey: Michael Rodd
  • Career Stats: 30s – 6w – 3p
  • Last Start: 5th at Albury

Fifth last start in the Albury Cup was his best result in a while but this is a Melbourne Cup starter. He’s got more than $1 million in prize money so don’t write this horse off.

#3 – Once Were Wild (Barrier – 3) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Gai Waterhouse
  • Jockey: Nash Rawiller
  • Career Stats: 17s – 6w – 2p
  • Last Start: 9th at Rosehill

Great horse but is in horrible form of late. Started favourite last start before finishing 9th so it’s hard to see even Waterhouse turning that around

#4 – Showcause (Barrier – 11) (56kgs)

  • Trainer: Frank Ritchie
  • Jockey: Corey Brown
  • Career Stats: 23s – 5w – 8p
  • Last Start: 2nd at Ellerslie

Ran second in the Auckland Cup last start so the distance isn’t an issue in the slightest. Corey Brown leapt at the chance to ride this Kiwi so you know he’s a real winning threat.

#5 – Tinsel Town (Barrier – 8 ) (55.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Michael Moroney
  • Jockey: Glyn Schofield
  • Career Stats: 44s – 8w – 8p
  • Last Start: 11th at Ellerslie

Ran a similar New Zealand Auckland Cup lead up to Showcause and started off quite well. Faded in the Cup though and it’s hard to see him improving enough to win.

#6 – Saint Encosta (Barrier – 15) (52.5kgs)

  • Trainer: John P Thompson
  • Jockey: Daniel Ganderton
  • Career Stats: 19s – 2w – 4p
  • Last Start: 8th at Rosehill

Won two starts back but was never in the race last time out. Wide barrier but has light weight, never been ridden by Ganderton.

#7 – Strike One (Barrier – 16) (52.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Chris Waller
  • Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy
  • Career Stats: 36s – 7w – 13p
  • Last Start: 7th at Rosehill

He’s won over 3200m so will run the trip but it’s his form that’s more of a concern. A second place last December in the Randwick Summer Cup is his best result for a while.

#8 – Older Than Time (Barrier – 14) (52kgs)

  • Trainer: Gai Waterhouse
  • Jockey: Glen Boss
  • Career Stats: 9s – 5w – 3p
  • Last Start: 1st at Rosehill

The most in-from horse in the field with four straight victories but stepping up in distance here. Never won over 1900m but has done everything right this preparation.

#9 – Miss Keepsake (Barrier – 13) (52kgs)

  • Trainer: Joseph Pride
  • Jockey: Nathan Berry
  • Career Stats: 16s – 4w – 4p
  • Last Start: 11th at Rosehill

Has a victory over 2400m but her recent form is far from impressive. Best result this year was placing at Warwick Farm over 1600m but couldn’t offer anything last start.

#10 – Count Encosta (Barrier – 4) (52kgs)

  • Trainer: John P Thompson
  • Jockey: Jim Byrne
  • Career Stats: 18s – 3w – 1p
  • Last Start: 8th at Rosehill

The form turnaround needed for this horse to win would be nothing short of a miracle. Much closer to last than first in every race this year and it’ll be the same again.

#11 – Galizani (Barrier – 7) (52kgs)

  • Trainer: John P Thompson
  • Jockey: Jim Cassidy
  • Career Stats: 8s – 3w – 2p
  • Last Start: 1st at Rosehill

The best of Thompson’s runners coming off a last start win at Rosehill. Not many can boast a last start victory so that alone works to override the lack of experience over this distance.

Bet on Galizani now at Luxbet

#12 – Miss Darcey (Barrier – 10) (52kgs)

  • Trainer: Anthony Cummings
  • Jockey: Rodd Quinn
  • Career Stats: 31s – 3w – 8p
  • Last Start: 8th at Rosehill

Win percentage isn’t exactly friendly and we can’t see a lot of arguments for that to get any better here. Hussonet mare needing every bit of luck and then some.

Bet on Miss Darcey now at Luxbet

#13 – Stand To Gain (Barrier – 12) (52kgs)

  • Trainer: Chris Waller
  • Jockey: Brenton Avdulla
  • Career Stats: 20s – 4w – 6p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Rosehill

Recent record isn’t electric but probably better than most of this field. Last start third as a $51 chance in the Manion Cup at Rosehill, won’t get that value here.

Bet on Stand To Gain now at Luxbet

#14 – Anudjawun (Barrier – 5) (52kgs)

  • Trainer: Shaun Dwyer
  • Jockey: Craig Williams
  • Career Stats: 11s – 1w – 8p
  • Last Start: 2nd at Caulfield

Here’s your place bet from gate 5. Only missed the money twice his career but unfortunately only one of those has been a victory. Should be good value and could lead if they choose to.

Bet on Anudjawun now at Luxbet

#15 – Sandberg (Barrier – 1) (52kgs)

  • Trainer: Guy Walter
  • Jockey: Kathy O’Hara
  • Career Stats: 15s – 5w – 3p
  • Last Start: 6th at Rosehill

A 33 percent win rate is quite good for a stayer and he has won over 2400m. Gets barrier 1 for the third race in a row and won two starts back at Canterbury.

Bet on Sandberg now at Luxbet

#16 – The Patriot (Barrier – 9) (52kgs)

  • Trainer: Luke Price
  • Jockey: Peter Wells
  • Career Stats: 37s – 4w – 18p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Warwick Farm

Don’t read too much into his last start third as it came in a field of five. Having said that his two previous placings were in good sized fields. Won’t win but could sneak another third.

Bet on The Patriot now at Luxbet

#16 – Cyber Crime (Barrier – 2) (52kgs)

  • Trainer: Guy Walter
  • Jockey: Christian Reith
  • Career Stats: 9s – 2w – 2p
  • Last Start: 1st at Kensington

Only the two wins but he’s always been there or there abouts. His wins were over 2100m and 2500m as well so despite his comparative inexperience he can run the trip. A threat from barrier 2.
