Betting Update & Form – 2011 Sapphire Stakes

April 8th, 2011

The Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) will run as one of nine Group races on Randwick’s AJC Australian Derby Day this Saturday April 9, 2011.

The $175,000 Sapphire Stakes’ betting markets have begun to take shape, and Joseph Pride’s Ladys Angel has emerged as the early favourite.

Currently paying odds of $6.50 to win at Luxbet, Ladys Angel finished second in her last start in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes on March 26, 2011.

Ladys Angel has drawn extremely well in the barrier draw and will jump from barrier four in the 2011 Sapphire Stakes.

Currently occupying the position of second favouritism is David Pfieffer’s Graceful Anna.

Graceful Anna had a disappointing run last start in the Group 1 Coolmore Stakes, where she finished 14th out of a 15 horse field.

However, the Canny Lad mare has finished second in three of her five races this preparation and her out of character performance last race could be overlooked.

Ofcourseican is currently the third-favourite in the 2011 Sapphire Stakes betting.

The four-year old mare has had an extremely successful preparation so far, winning two of her four races.

Ofcourseican’s trainer, Ron Quinton, is happy with his mare’s performances this preparation.

“Her form this time in has been very strong and her form all the way along has been very consistent,” Quinton said.

“We are trying to improve her record and now she has some black type under her belt, this is very important from a breeding point of view.”

Quinton is not at all concerned with the possibility that Randwick may be classified as a wet track come the 2011 Sapphire Stakes tomorrow.

“I am very happy with her work at the moment, she is a good eater and with some wet track form, if the rain continues it shouldn’t worry her at all. She is a very tough mare,” Quinton said.
