Kicking off 2011 Australian Derby Day at Randwick Racecourse this weekend is the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes over 1100m.
Betting has been slow to really commence for this race with punters focusing a lot of their time on the big Group 1’s later in the day.
Despite this on race day as always there will be a late influx especially given the makeup of the 2011 field.
It’s all about the debutant early on with Luxbet.com opening Conroy’s Gap as favourite for the $125,000 event.
“While he’s yet to run his barrier trials have been excellent and we think he’ll carry over his track work speed to race day,” expert tipper Paul Vincent said.
“You know for a fact Gerald Ryan will have him presented extremely well and the fact he’s put his top jockey Hugh Bowman aboard means he thinks he’s a great chance.”
It’s a big rap for Conroy’s Gap considering that puts him comfortably ahead of his stable mate Hot Snitzel which is at $5.50.
Just last week Hot Snitzel started in the Golden Slipper and despite finishing 12th he clearly has the experience at a high level against Australia’s best two year olds.
Third in betting is Aubazine at $6.00 which has had only the single career start.
The filly ran fifth at Randwick in December last year and could surprise after nearly four months maturing in the paddock
Queenian is fourth in betting at $7.50 which is quite surprising given his rather uninspiring career history.
He’s had just two starts for a fourth and a fifth with his last run back on January first in a Randwick handicap race.
The other two horses in single figures are Anise and Fox, both at $9.00 and both with second placings behind top level competition.
Anise ran second to Foxwedge first up this year while Fox was second to Do You Think last start.
The 2011 Kindergarten Stakes will kick off the Australian Derby Day program at Royal Randwick this Saturday at 11:20am.
