Unable to match the late pace and 10th in the race’s 2013 edition, trainer Mike Moroney has confirmed talented Irish import Voleuse De Coeurs will be set on a spring path geared towards a tilt at the featured 2014 Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on November 4th.
Beginning his career under the guidance of leading Irish trainer Dermot Weld, who personally experienced Melbourne Cup glory via Vintage Crop in 1993 and Media Puzzle in 2002, Voleuse De Coeurs was purchased by Eliza Park International after winning the Group 1 Irish St Leger (2816m) on September 15th.
Unable to figure in the placings in three starts over autumn, Moroney told RVN the Teofilo mare appeared to be flattened by her first-up run in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) after only a short break, and is expecting far-greater things from the five-year-old through spring.
“I just wonder whether the short break between the spring and the autumn and that tough run first up flattened her,” Moroney said.
“I just got a funny feeling that first up run might have just taken the edge off her and coming off a short break and that long travel might have just been too much for her.
“I think the Australian Cup run first up might have flattened her, she only got beaten a length-and-a-half on a firm track, ran right up to her best in that race and then her two runs in Sydney were disappointing.”
Unable to contest a warm-up event to the 2013 Melbourne Cup on account of her whirlwind purchase and trip to her Australian home, Moroney said he will seek a far-more conventional lead-up to this year’s Melbourne Cup for Voleuse De Coeurs.
“I think she’ll go the weight-for-age path toward the Cup, it’s a possibility she could run in the Caulfield Cup, she will definitely be nominated we’ll just see on what path we’ll take to the Melbourne Cup,” Moroney said.
“I think we’ll go a different path, 1400m or something first up and then give her that kind of a more traditional preparation.
“She will be nominated for all those big races and we’ll just see what path we’ll take”.
Contesting an impressive total of five wins and as many minor places from just 17 competitive starts so far, Voleuse De Coeurs is currently offered at generous odds of $34 for success in early betting markets for the 2014 Melbourne Cup at Ladbrokes.com.au.
