Puissance De Lune Completes Gallop ahead of 2014 Spring Campaign

July 15th, 2014

Unable to take his place in the 2013 Melbourne Cup after sustaining a tendon injury during the running of the featured Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) in late October, exciting stayer Puissance De Lune has completed a strong exhibition gallop in the lead up to the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.

Following an exceptional 2012 spring campaign and a solitary run for first in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) during the 2013 autumn, Puissance De Lune claimed clear favouritism in early betting markets for the Race that Stops a Nation and was unlucky not to claim a Group 1 title over spring starts prior.

Yet to confirm a path for the Shamardal entire through the spring, trainer Darren Weir said the initial aim will be the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m), with a first-up run confirmed for the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) on August 16th.

“He got through the gallop nicely. His legs are good today, which is the main things,” Weir told the Herald Sun.

“We took him there for a day out and just to get the show rolling again and everything went well.

“He’ll have another exhibition gallop in 10 days at Bendigo and then he’ll go into a trial.”

Claiming a total of eight race wins and five minor places from just 18 competitive race starts to date, Puissance De Lune was a standout performer over four races starts in Europe before being transferred to the care of Weir at the beginning of 2012.

Securing three wins and one second place from five starts during the 2012 spring, including the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) most notably, the stallion out of Princess Serena won the 2013 edition of the PB Lawrence Stakes and was unlucky to finish second in both the Makybe Diva Stakes and Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) prior to his ill-fated appearance at Moonee Valley on October 26th.

Blowing betting markets open after being withdrawn from the 2013 Melbourne Cup, Puissance De Lune is currently offered at generous odds of $34 for success in this year’s feature race, to be held on November 4th.
