A typically consistent performer over the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Flemington-based trainer Saab Hasan has confirmed rising five-year-old Shoreham will be included in nominations for the featured Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on November 4th, but conceded he may not have the talent to secure a position in the race’s final field.
Steadily building to the task over six starts earlier this year, Shoreham was unlucky to be blocked for a run and seventh in the Listed Super Saturday Stakes (1400m) first-up on March 8th, but continued on to claim a fighting fifth in the Group 3 Easter Cup (200m) and third in the Listed Warrnambool Cup (2350m) most notably on May 1st.
Having finished fourth in the Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes (3200m) most recently on May 24th, Hasan has been thrilled with the way the Reset gelding has resumed work and is confident in another strong campaign through spring.
“He is flying, he has come back in great condition,” Hasan told Racing Ahead.
“He has held his weight really, really well this prep.
“He has been back for about five weeks and I couldn’t be happier with him, I think that we will see the best of him this prep.”
Initially underlining the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Flemington in November as a likely target for Shoreham this time in, Hasan said he is yet to settle on a racing path, with several major spring options worth serious consideration.
“I really don’t know,” Hasan said of Shoreham’s racing path.
“We are still going to nominate for the Melbourne Cup and keep the dream alive, but realistically he needs to learn to settle.
“He pulled a little hard in the Andrew Ramsden here and there are heaps of races.
“You have the Queen Elizabeth, Geelong Cup, Moonee Valley Cup.
“There are plenty of options for the horse and we will nominate like everyone else to keep the dream alive in the Melbourne Cup, but he may not be good enough to get a run in it this year.”
A notable performer over spring racing events, Shoreham was unlucky to be hampered in the final straight and sixth in the 2013 edition of the Listed Cranbourne Cup (2025m) on October 13th, but responded in the best way possible when finishing second to champion veteran Precedence in the Group 2 International Cup (2500m) on October 26th.
