Like A Carousel produced arguably his most impressive effort to date when third in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) during The Championships, and trainer Ken Keys has revealed a campaign geared towards the 2015 Melbourne Cup remains on the cards for the talented stayer.
Like A Carousel has interestingly posted only two wins through his 27 start career so far, but has finished in the first three a further ten times, including his most recent effort for third in the Sydney Cup, for which he jumped a $150 chance for success.
Keys has been thrilled with the benefit the Helike gelding has taken from his time away from racing and told Racing Victoria a 2015 Melbourne Cup Carnival campaign remains a realistic possibility however nothing is yet to be set in stone.
“He’s going well since coming back into work and the ultimate aim for him is to get him into the Melbourne Cup, whether or not we can, time will tell,” Keys said.
“We haven’t decided on a program yet of how we’ll be getting him there, but he’s likely to start mid-September in something like the Naturalism Stakes.
“One option is through The Bart Cummings, so we’re looking at that.
“We won’t be looking at the Caulfield Cup for him, only Melbourne.”
A standout performer for Keys through the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Like A Carousel placed fifth in the Listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m) on March 1st; progressing to a credible fourth in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) but failing to fire in either of the Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) on Sydney Cup.
Charging home to win the Listed Harry White Classic (2400m) early in his Spring Carnival campaign, Like A Carousel placed third in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) and returned to the paddock after placing a close second to Renew in the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m).
Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2015 Melbourne Cup odds, for which Like A Carousel can be taken at a particularly generous quote of $67 for success.
