Prominent owner Lloyd Williams has revealed Order Of St George will be nominated for the 2016 Melbourne Cup following his impressive win in the Group 1 Gold Cup (4023m) at Royal Ascot last week.
Order Of St George has been a strong and consistent performer through a light but impressive racing career so far; claiming six wins and a further three minors through only eleven starts, highlighted by two triumphs at the highest level.
Jumping from the gates well in the Gold Cup, jockey Ryan Moore allowed the Galileo colt to stride forward and take a position on pace; dictating terms for the talented field of seventeen from the outset of the major staying test.
Settling into a good rhythm and experiencing a carefree run in transit, Order Of St George was offered a clear racing line upon arriving at the final straight and made it count; mustering an impressive turn of foot to pull clear and find the line more than three lengths ahead of closest rival Mizzou.
Williams has been thrilled with the results posted by the four-year-old so far, but revealed will not run in the Melbourne Cup if he is charged with a big weight.
“If he’s absolutely anchored in it there is no point in bringing him all the way,” Williams told PAA.
Trainer Aidan O’Brien was pleased with Order Of St George’s effort to win the 2016 Gold Cup and revealed the horse will be set for a defence of his crown in the Group 1 Irish St Leger (2816m) prior to the Melbourne Cup.
“He won’t come back for the King George. We were always going to give him a break after this week and look at an autumn campaign,” O’Brien said.
“I spoke to his owner Lloyd Williams last night and he is going to be entered in the Melbourne Cup.”
Order Of St George returned to racing in 2015 in particularly slick form; running second in the Group 3 Curragh Cup (2816m) before taking out his three subsequent starts including both the Group 3 St Leger Trial Stakes (2816m) and Irish St Leger.
Having won the Listed Saval Beg Stakes (2816m) in his only other start prior to the Gold Cup this time, Order Of St George currently figures as outright $13 favourite in early 2016 Melbourne Cup betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
