The Caulfield Cup Carnival is one of the biggest events in Australian horse racing and the second most important event of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
While technically only a smaller part of the overall Caulfield Spring Carnival, the Caulfield Cup Carnival is the highlight. Caulfield Guineas Day and Thousand Guineas Day act as great lead up events, but they pale in comparison to the enthusiasm racing fans and punters display for the Caulfield Cup.
Obviously the feature race of the Caulfield Cup Carnival is the Group 1 Caulfield Cup, a 2400 metre race considered to be a good indicator for the Melbourne Cup, but it is not the only major race on the day. There are 6 Group level races in all that are run during the Caulfield Cup Carnival, and they are all eagerly followed by punters.
The other major races in the Caulfield Cup Carnival are:
The Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, an open race for 3 year olds at set weights that is run over 1600 metres.
The Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (Yalumba Stakes), a weight for age event run over a 2000 metre distance for horses three years old and over.
The Group 1 Toorak Handicap, an open handicap run over a distance of 1600 metres.
The Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes, a quality handicap raced over 2400 metres.
The Group 2 Schillaci Stakes, a Weight-For-Age sprint over a distance of 1000 metres open to horses aged three years and older.
The Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes, a race for 3 year old fillies at set weights with penalties run over 1200 metres.
The Group 1 Thousand Guineas, an open race at set weights for 3 year old fillies, run over a 1600 metre distance.
The Group 2 Caulfield Sprint, an open handicap race run over a distance of 1100 metres.
The Group 2 Tristarc Stakes, a race for mares four years and older run at set weights plus penalties over a 1400 metre distance.
The Group 3 Moonga Stakes, a race for horses 4 year olds and up at set weights plus penalties, over a 1400 metre distance.
The Group 3 David Jones Cup, an open handicap race run over a distance of 2000 metres.
The Group 3 Caulfield Classic (Norman Robinson Stakes), a race for 3 year olds at set weights, run over 2000 metres.
The rest of the races on the Caulfield Cup Carnival card are lesser events, but they still attract a great deal of attention due to airing of the race card live on television.
