Perth Cup Carnival

While the Group 2 Perth Cup may not be huge in terms of Australian horse racing as a whole, the Perth Cup Carnival is the biggest racing event in Western Australia. A New Year’s Day tradition for Australia’s largest state, the Perth Cup Carnival tests its runners during the peak of the summer heat.

Unlike the other major Cup carnivals, the Perth Cup Carnival does not play host to a lot of major Group races. Nevertheless, it is still an exciting day that is one of the most popular attractions to Ascot Racecourse, coming soon after the peak of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival – the Kingston Town Classic – and capping off the major racing action in Perth.

One very important aspect of the Perth Cup Carnival is the fashion. While it is the other major Cup carnivals that get the attention for racing fashions, the Perth Cup Carnival also brings out its share of fashionistas, as it is among Perth’s most important social events. The rules are not as fixed as for Melbourne Cup fashion, which sometimes leads to real innovation from WA’s best dressed ladies and lads.

The two major races of the Perth Cup Carnival are:

The Group 2 Perth Cup, an open handicap raced over a distance of 2400 metres.

The Listed Summer Scorcher, an open handicap sprint over just 1000 metres.
