French horse Dunaden has won the 2011 Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse on November 1, 2011.

The six-year-old entire won the race ahead of Red Cadeaux by the skin of his teeth in what was the smallest winning margin in Melbourne Cup history.

Lucas Cranach held on for a gallant third, while last year’s winner and race favourite Americain sprinted home for fourth.

Dunaden’s owner, Sheik Fahad al Thani, was thrilled to have won his Melbourne Cup at age 22 and after only 18 years in the thoroughbred industry.

“It is massive, I don’t think there is a bigger race to win,” Sheikh Fahad said.

“I am truly lucky to have done it in my second year, many people spend a lifetime trying to win this race.”

“(Jockey) Christophe (Lemaire) has a cool head, he walked the track and got a few pointers and he executed it perfectly.

“He’s a very calm man, he didn’t press the button too early … a magnificent ride.”

Trainer Mikel Delzangles believes Dunaden may in fact be back to defend his title in next year’s Melbourne Cup.

“If he’s well he’ll come back next year,” Delzangles said.

Today, Wednesday October 19, Dunaden became the second French-trained galloper in as many years to win the Geelong Cup, racing away with a commanding win and emerging as a genuine contender for the upcoming 2011 Melbourne Cup at Flemington.

Emulating last year’s Geelong Cup – Melbourne Cup winner Americain, the Mikel Delzangles-trained Dunaden made their Australian race debut as the 58kg topweight in the $225,000 Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) and easily accounted for their rivals.

Given a well-timed ride by jockey Craig Williams, who only days ago saluted aboard Southern Speed in the Caulfield Cup, Nicobar six-year-old Dunaden was able to run down and defeat the favourite Tanby for the 2011 Geelong Cup win.

Storming home strongly on the outside, Dunaden ($6) finished three-quarters of a length clear of the Robert Hickmott-trained Tanby ($3.10F) while Luca Cumani’s gallant old grey Bauer ($5.50) charged home late to snare third the same margin back again.

It was a significant Geelong Cup result as Dunaden has now firmed dramatically in the Luxbet markets for the $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November.

The third place finish by 2008 Geelong Cup winner and Melbourne Cup runner-up Bauer also saw the popular grey qualify for this year’s edition of the ‘race that stops a nation’, but they are still well down the order of entry and far from assured of a start.

Bauer was rated a $51 chance in the Melbourne Cup odds at Luxbet prior to the 2011 Geelong Cup results but has since been slashed into $21.

Williams warned that Dunaden would only improve once they get to Flemington over the two-miles of the iconic Melbourne Cup.

“His best distance is 3000 (metres) and above,” Williams said.

Descarado has reignited his Melbourne Cup campaign with a win in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse last Saturday.

Last year’s Caulfield Cup winner was a non-finisher in the 2010 Melbourne Cup after he broke down before the finish line.

Waterhouse believes his Caulfield Stakes triumph proves he is back to his best in time for the $6.2 million Melbourne Cup 2011.

“He’s come right and he’s come right at the right time,” Waterhouse said.

“I knew he would come right just the way he was training.”

Jockey Nash Rawiller admitted he was unconvinced of Descarado’s 2011 Melbourne Cup hopes earlier in his campaign.

“I said to Gai three or four weeks ago, ‘we might have to pull the plug here’ because he wasn’t coming up as we would have liked,” Rawiller said.

“To her credit, Gai has had faith all the way through.”

Descarado’s Caulfield Stakes win was his first since winning the Caulfield Cup in October last year.

With just four meetings remaining in the current racing season, both jockey Chris Munce and trainer Robert Heathcote are edging ever closer to personal milestones.

Heathcote currently has 58.5 winners to his name after a successful day of racing last weekend saw Simmering, Solzhenitsyn and Excellantes produce winning runs.

60 Queensland winners in a season has only been achieved by two other trainers, with the late Bruce McLachlan passing the mark six times and Gerald Ryan achieving the number twice.

While he hopes to join the exclusive club, Heathcote is just pleased to be competing at such a high level of racing.

“I have already hit $3 million in prize money this year after being just under last year,” he said.

“I have a good infrastructure working now.

“What has pleased me the most is that I can go away and everything ticks over as smooth as.

“That’s important and it’s a sign that things are going pretty well.”

While Heathcote is only two winners away from his goal, Chris Munce is just six wins from breaking his personal record of 85 winning rides.

Those 85 winners secured him the 1991-92 Brisbane Jockey Premiership title.

Munce only has two meetings left to break the record but feels the magical number is within his reach.

“I tell you what, I’ll give it a good crack,” Munce said.

“If I can top 80 I will still be over the moon.

“My main goal was to just get the premiership.”

Munce believes that moving back to continue his career in Queensland is the best decision he could have made.

“I have had a number of trainers helping me along the way and it’s been good, particularly without the support of one single stable,” he said.

“Moving back to Brisbane is the best thing we could have done as a family.

“I am enjoying my time up here and to have achieved the goal I set out to, I’m pretty happy about it.”

The jockey is looking to gain some good rides for the upcoming spring and autumn carnivals down south.

“It would be good if I could line up a few nice horses for the carnivals, but if that doesn’t work out I would like to target another premiership and having a better winter carnival next year,” he said.

The 2011 Adrian Knox Stakes was a quality handicap race open to three-year-old fillies only.

Worth $150,000, the Adrian Knox stakes featured a 16-horse capacity starting field.

Who’s Ready was the early leader of the 2011 Adrian Knox Stakes field, leading the others by more than a length for the majority of the race.

The field was spread across the track down the home straight until Crafty Irna stormed through the middle of the field to win by over a length.

Raspberries ran home well to finish in second while Becerra held on for third.

Crafty Irna’s trainer, Ron Quinton, felt that his filly deserved to win today.

“She’s been taking nice steps along the way,” Quinton said.

“I couldn’t have been happier with her coming into today.”

Crafty Irna won the 2011 Adrian Knox Stakes in a time of two minutes and 4.69 seconds.

The filly will now head to the Australian Oaks at Randwick on April 16, 2011.

The four-year-old mare had only won one of her previous 12 starts coming into this race and had not finished better than seventh during this current preparation.

However, the Dane Shadow mare has now added a very valuable Group win to her name and has taken her career earnings to almost $265,000.

Hurtle Myrtle won the $175,000 Sapphire Stakes by just over a length ahead of Kimillsy, who finished in second, and Marquardt who ran home for third.

The mare paid long odds of $21 for the win at Luxbet, while favourite Graceful Anna was unable to finish in the placings.

Hurtle Myrtle’s trainer, Matthew Smith, was proud of the efforts of his gutsy mare.

“When they’ve had a year off it’s sometimes hard to get them back where you want to have them,” Smith said.

“She trialled super and is back to her best.”

Jockey Damien Oliver said he knew right away that Hurtle Myrtle was going to win the race.

“Once I peeled off their backs I thought she was going to be hard to beat,” he said.

Oliver was happy to have saluted on the same day as champion Black Caviar graced Randwick Racecourse, but said the extra interest has caused him some problems.

“There was a bit of traffic coming to the races today, I almost missed my first ride,” Oliver said.

Hurtle Myrtle was due to be auctioned at the Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale next week, however, that is sure to be reconsidered after her Group winning performance today.

Helmet won the 2011 Sires’ Produce Stakes by half a length ahead of Uate, who finished in second and Pane In The Glass, who passed the post in third.

The two-year-old Exceed And Excel colt has now won his last three starts and has not once finished outside the placings.

Race favourite Elite Falls produced a disappointing run after not being held up for a run down the home straight.

Peter Snowden was overjoyed with Helmet’s winning performance in the 2011 Sires’ Produce Stakes.

“That’s a huge effort. He’s had a really stop start preparation,” Snowden said.

“He presented well and he behaved himself really well and Kerrin (McEvoy) rode him well.

“To his credit he hung in there and held out on the line and I’m very happy with his efforts.”

Helmet will now be sent to the Group 1 Champagne Stakes at Randwick Racecourse on April 23, 2011.

“If he gets a mile in the Champagne (AJC Champagne Stakes) you’d have to think he’s a Caulfield Guineas horse,” Snowden said.

Kerrin McEvoy, who rode Helmet to victory in the race, feels that the best of Helmet is still to come.

“He’s got good ability, he’s just a larrikin,” McEvoy said.

“He’s got lots of potential there and he’s only half trying.”

Asked why Helmet hasn’t yet reached his full potential, McEvoy put it down to his state of mind.

“I think because he does it so easily he switches off a little bit,” he said.

“He’s a nice horse that’s going to go further.”

Up against a field of eight Group 1 winners in today’s race, Black Caviar once again demonstrated her astounding talent by blitzing another quality field.

Proving she is in fact the world’s best race horse, Black Caviar won the 2011 TJ Smith Stakes by a staggering two and three-quarter lengths, easing up on the line in her now trademark style.

Putting an end to rumours that she would struggle travelling the Sydney way; Black Caviar looked at ease while powering her way to another effortless victory.

Although the superstar did give the crowd a scare, rounding the home turn a long way behind the talented Hay List.

However, she demonstrated her tremendous talent and speed by running Hay List down to win convincingly.

Hay List finished five lengths ahead of the rest of the TJ Smith Stakes field in second, while Triple Honour rounded out the placings in third.

Peter Moody was full of admiration for Black Caviar’s stunning performance.

“She’s got that relaxed laid back mannerism about her and that’s why I’ve always had the feeling she’d run any trip you wanted,” Moody said.

“Luke (Nolen) gave her a backhander and probably for the first time he genuinely had to.”

Moody told of why winning this race meant even more to him than usual.

“It’s tremendous and it gives me a great thrill to win a race named after the master TJ Smith,” he said.

“We’re just going to enjoy the moment.”

Jockey Luke Nolen was feeling only one thing as he past the post first again; relief.

“Relief was the emotion,” Nolen said.

“We just bided our time and kept out of trouble.”

Nolen will continue to ride Black Caviar in her Brisbane winter carnival campaign.

“If she stays in one piece then look out Queensland,” Nolen said.

Black Caviar was the spectacle that brought people from around the country together at Randwick Racecourse today.

“At the moment she’s a deserving people’s champion,” Nolen said.

“We’re privileged to have anything to do with her and I thank god every day.”

Pam Hawkes, who is one of the winning mare’s eight part-owners, was in awe with the incredible superstar that is Black Caviar.

“It’s a dream and as I’ve said before the dream came true,” Ms Hawkes said.

Black Caviar has now won an unbelievable 12 straight races, and is yet to be beaten in her phenomenal racing career.

The next stop for Black Caviar will be Brisbane for the Brisbane Winter racing Carnival, where she is due to compete in both the Group 1 BTC Cup on May 14, 2011 and the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 on May 28, 2011.

In what can only be described as true stayer’s from, Once Were Wild held off the others to win the $175,000 Chairman’s Handicap by almost two lengths.
