Crowds flock to Flemington for Melbourne Cup Day

Without doubt the highlight of Flemington’s Cup Carnival is the Emirates Melbourne Cup Day, held on the first Tuesday of November annually.

Melbourne Cup Day is an Australian tradition and its importance and prestige is highlighted by the fact that it is a public holiday in Victoria.

The world-renowned Melbourne Cup Day is an elite day of racing with the showcase event being the $6 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m), Australia’s most lucrative and famous thoroughbred race.

The Melbourne Cup, which is also the richest handicap race in the world, is not the only Group status race at the meeting. There are two Group 3 events; the $200,000 Maybe Mahal Stakes (1400m) open to mares four years and older and run under set weights with penalties, and the $150,000 Ottawa Stakes (1000m), open to two year old fillies and run under set weights with penalties. Also on the day are three listed events.

Emirates Melbourne Cup Day is all about fashion, flair and of course betting on the world’s most impressive stayers.
